Chapter 14

Elizabeth stood watching Darcy leave with her hand unwittingly travelling on her cheek as she recalled the kiss he had given her the day before. She reflected on a sensation his kind gesture had produced within her, wondering about its meaning.

She lingered a bit longer outside before returning to Georgiana, and she strolled about the beautifully manicured gardens, allowing her thoughts to wander to her cousin. She felt tremendous gratitude to him that he had taken it upon himself to help Jane's family and engaged himself in Mr Wickham's affairs.

She had never felt more disappointed with herself, reflecting on the history of her remarks to him, accusing him of being selfish and arrogant, though he was one of the best men she had ever known.

Elizabeth sighed and took in the lush view around her, letting the warmth of the sun flush her face. She had never cared for the silly fashion of going about pale as a ghost in the height of summer!

She headed directly to her cousin's room when she returned to the house.

"Where were you, Lizzy?" Georgiana croaked when Elizabeth entered the chamber.

"I am sorry, Georgie. I took a turn around the gardens and lost track of time."

"Lizzy, will you tell me why my brother so suddenly left for London?" asked the girl. "He is always so adamant about keeping things from me as if I was still a child," complained she.

"He left on business," Elizabeth looked at the fire to keep her expression hidden from Georgiana. She knew better than to reveal the nature of Fitzwilliam's business. "How are you feeling?"

The girl shifted in her bed and frowned, seeing how Elizabeth nervously fluffed the pillows, attempting to avoid the topic of her brother's sudden departure. "I know that something has happened, Lizzy."

Elizabeth pulled her lips between her teeth, considering how to respond.

"Is someone ill?"

"It is not my place to speak of it with you, Georgie, but the business your brother must attend to is not concerning anyone's health, I assure you."

The girl narrowed her eyes in disapproval. "I am not a child, Lizzy."

"Indeed, you are not."

"But my brother still considers me as such and is rather overprotecting of me because of what George did to me," confessed Georgiana. "And I know everyone else treats me the same way, but you must know, Lizzy, that I have put the incident behind me."

"As you should." Elizabeth smiled encouragingly.

"I am not proud of being so easily fooled, but Fitzwilliam has bared the hardship of caring for me," said she, looking down at her hands. "I only wish he would find a woman who would do the same for him."

"He does it because he loves you." Elizabeth put the arm around her cousin's shoulders and let her head rest against herself. "Any lady fortunate enough to catch your brother's attention must be a true definition of an accomplished lady," joked she. “Which means it shall take him a while to find the right one.”

"Aside from your lack of musical talent," Georgiana raised her head and smiled brightly at Elizabeth, "you fit the profile perfectly.
